Why Write?
George Orwell depicts his beliefs of the writer within his essay, "Why I write", which distinguishes the natural impulse for one to write about their own experiencess. Orwell bases this impulse into for categories: historical impulse, political impulse, sheer egoism. and aesthetic enthusiam. I agree with this belief, because we use our own experiences and thoughts to decipher any new event or text we encounter. Orwell states, “one can write nothing readable unless one constantly struggles to efface one’s own personality”, and this is something I can really relate to. In my own writing, I feel like I struggle with deciphering my own voice and bringing my own opinions to the plate. Yet, I feel like this has to do with the issue of the classroom being so focused on test scores and comprehension of "the right answer". I really believe that we must evoke within our students the want to write and to push for our students to write or draw from a personal experience.
Within the classroom I believe educators should focus on well rounding their students through group discussion, analysis and opinion pieces, and more creative writing. In doing so, students will learn to use improvisational skills which are vital in everyday life. Students will learn how to formulate their own opinions and creatively present them. This gives students the chance to really take in the material they are learning, as well as being able to add their own spin on it.
I would love to challenge my students with the idea of being given five minutes to write on a specific subject. I will give a term, related to the text, and from there time my students. I really enjoy the idea of this challenge because it pushes the students improvisational skills, writing skills, personal opinion writing skills, and so much more. From this, the students can group up and talk about how they went with the term and why. I really want to encourage my students to be creative thinkers and strengthen their reflective skills. In the process of this I want my students to try and decipher exactly who they are and how they want to write. From this challenge I want to focus on my students, their abilitities, and to also uncover their personal interests.
